Telling The Fam

A mother does not become pregnant in order to provide employment to medical people. Giving birth is an ecstatic jubilant adventure not available to males. It is a woman's crowning creative experience of a lifetime.”

― John Stevenson

Finding out we were pregnant was… surreal.

I was sitting in my favorite stall in the work bathroom (you have one too, girl, chill.) frantically
sending Derek messages on his iPhone and his Facebook Messenger that IT’S POSITIVE!!!!!!!!

But I also told… kind of a lot of other people at the same time. I told....

My Momma

Because, obviously. Like, c’mon. She’s my mom. I literally tell her everything.
Which was honestly like a tiny bit satisfying because I had texted her a few days prior to tell her that I was late and felt weird and she kept saying it was nothing and that my period would come. (Welp! Still hasn’t come. Momma!) She was over the moon ecstatic. I think she actually sent me a “woo!” and I called her after work to hear her literally scream.

She wants to be called Nana.

My Bridal Party

So I did have to like immediately tell my entire bridal party because I had scheduled a dress-shopping-day that weekend. (That I was actually looking forward to like… brazy.) So the second I found out I was preggers, I cancelled the dress fitting because
  1. My mind was in a totally different place
  2. I still have no idea what we’re gonna do about this wedding? Elope? Idk, another blog for another day.
  3. Even if we were to go along with the wedding (3.14.2020) Imma have an entirely different body by then so… whatever dress I pick is prob gonna look wild by then.

So, that was that.

Hahahaha, okay so, Shelbie and I were texting about the Blogger Sleepover that was happening in a matter of days, and I decided to ask her if the symptoms I was experiencing were actual signs of pregnancy or me flipping out. She provided her input (“Oh shoot, you pregnant.”) and I felt like I owed her a confirmation that she was right. Lol.

A Coworker I Trust

…. because honestly, I could not hold it in. I was so unable to concentrate and focus… it was unreal. I had to have an ally at work that I could look at and just be like “yo what is happening to my body” and have her whisper a remedy to me.

Future In-Laws

We waited to tell Derek’s parents because I totally blew it on telling mine. We called them the following morning (I called his mom from my phone, he called his dad from his phone because we couldn’t get them in the same room at the same time) They were both SUPER excited. That was a moment I’ll cherish forever.

Our Friend Group

So this is sort of a funny story. Derek had a haircut scheduled a day after or the day I found out I was pregnant. He found it almost impossible to sit and make small talk with his hair stylist (who is also pregnant) and ended up spilling the beans. He made her promise not to tell even though she is a part of our group of friends and her sister is a close friend.

Fast forward a couple of days and we decide to let a few members of extended family know about the pregnancy, including Derek’s cousin, who is best friends with the hair stylist's sister. Well with so many second-degree-people knowing we decided it was time to just let all of the degrees in on the info. So, in the car, on the way to Ikea, I group-texted all the girls and Derek group-texted all the guys that SURPRISE: We're Preggers!

Everyone else...

We resolved to tell my extended family at Thanksgiving and the rest of the world after we had an ultrasound. (Carrying a secret is heavy, let me tell you.)

The most amazing thing is that everyone's reaction was nothing short of learning that they'd won the lottery or a trip to Disneyworld. Plenty of hugs and tears and "Omg" and "I'm SO happy for you guys." Which is wonderful. It shows that our friends and family trust us and like us so much that they were super excited for us to create a mini-version of ourselves.

Who did you tell right away when you were pregnant? What were their reactions? Do you regret not telling certain people in a cool way? Let me know!
